Alopecia Areata Awareness Month

September is National Alopecia Areata Awareness Month. Please join the NAAF in their efforts to bring attention and understanding to this condition which impacts 6.5 million people in the United States. Their rallying motto is “Look at Us!”

Alopecia Areata:

  • Is an autoimmune disorder that triggers hair loss on the scalp and body.
  • Usually presents as a small round patches and progresses to total hair loss.
  • Often occurs in families with asthma and allergies and autoimmune diseases.
  • Is presently not curable, but it can resolve and go into remission.
  • Can be treated with cortisone injections, and anthralin cream.
  • Can recur any time after hair grows back.
  • Is not a health threat, but results can be emotionally devastating.

Instead of hiding from curious stares or unkind comments, courageous alopecia areata sufferers are saying, “Look at me. I have a skin condition that needs effective treatment options and a cure.”

Please don’t look away. Look at what you can do to support awareness and research
